  • My group produced a short film and used a number of techniques to plan the story line. These are so follows; brain-storming and storyboarding. Initially we brain-stormed our ideas and selected one that was appropriate and realistic in the time we were given to plan and produce a video clip. Our storyboard included a sequence of pictures given us a guideline to follow when filming. Because our film had no audio and only background music there was no need to write a script.

My group found having a storyboard extremely useful during filming as it gave us all an outline of what we should be filming. Another important part of our planning was delegating each team member a specific task/role, this organised us and we were able to work on different aspects of the video production and have a sense of contribution to the overall video clip. These roles were; camera crew, props, actors and director. Collectively we edited our video clip.

  • The video that follows is one my group produced, title: "Parking on Campus"

Assistive technology

Assistive technology refers to the "board range of devices, services, strategies and practices that are conceived and applied to the problems and difficulties faced by individuals that have disabilities" (Cook & Hussey, 2000, p. 5.).

  • One particular piece of equipment that was talked about in the assitive technology tutorial was standard keyboard. This piece of technology allows for both one handed and two handed touch typing. By holding the space bar down accesses the alternative keys that mirror the other half of a standard keyboard. The one-handed typing capability can be switched on or off by the user, therfore can be used as a two handed keyboard- very useful in a working environment and within the home for those who have acquired an injury resulting in the loss of a hand extremity. USB connection for PC and MAC operating systems.

  • One handed typing keyboard increases functional capacity by:
increases speed and decreases fatigue, for example could be used by a person with a CVA.
Give people independance who wouldn't nroamlly be able to use standard keyboards.

Internet and online communites

Online community: http://twitter.com

The focus of this community is networking and connecting people with one another.

The services Twitter provide are: messaging, activities- quizzing, finding people, connecting to twitter via cell phones, allows people to comment on others' pages, post photos, engage in conversation.

The site is very interactive allowing people to communicate with others, comment on photos and posts, updates people with what their friends are currently doing, and involves and keeps the person interested - by having quiz', games, and groups to join.

People choose to contribute to this community as it is a form of communicating and keeping in contact and updated with friends and family, especially if they live far away. This is also a community in which people meet, make new friends.

Potential ethical issues that may arise in this community are that people can access anyone's account, view their friend's account, limited privacy.

This community holds over traditional notions of community are:

- it involves all types of people

- geographical location does not matter

- can engage in conversation when it suits you - ie at night, in the morning and the person replying is the same

Although though this community has benefits, it lacks face to face communication that that of traditional communities can. In today's society people getting used to communicating with others via technologies.

Digital Camera use and applications

  • "A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature"
Technology is in some respects superior in which it has allowed for improvement in living, efficient access to information and has increased our ability to keep in contact with loved ones around the world. However in view of the superiority of new technology there has been devastating affects on generation y and beyond as children in developed countries, especially western ones, are not learning basic motor coordination skills and balance.

A minus is some technologies are useless in relation to their intended function, design and the expectation of the user. Some technology only appear better than the one they have attempted to replace, but there has only been a change in appearance. For example the device is slimmer with a colour selection.

A plus in using new technology that has successfully been improved makes people's occupations easier and more inefficient. For example with the introduction of roaming internet has allowed people to work while traveling.

  • Digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communications technology, these are listed below:
    1. computers
    2. USB
    3. digital memory stick
    4. printed form
    5. photo shop (programe on computer)

  • Ethical Issues that arise from the use of image capturing devices:
Digital cameras can go most places; in a variety of environments and can preform a range of tasks. For example zooming, taking out red eye and can change the colour tone of our photo. In photo shop people are able to change their appearances. This ability brings up issues of identity; ie the loss of identity.

The inability to control when and where an image is taken of you is becoming more and more prevalent is society. We especially see this with famous people and the media. The media produce thousands of copies of magazines which contain photographs of celebrities. These photos are not with consent. Celebrities are finding it harder than ever to keep their privacy and what they do when the movie camera is not on them.

Inclusion ethical issues are; lack of privacy, no informed consent of the photo taken and its intended purpose, and people's inability to control what happens to their photo- where it is stored and who views it.

  • The ways digital images are use or could be used in Occupational Therapy practice:
    1. videoing assessments
    2. including photos of clients and their environment in reports and applications. For example applications to ENABLE, contractors and other health professionals.

  • Services offered by Flickr.com include:
    1. A site to store photos on
    2. able to share photos with others
    3. organise photo

  • Another photo storage website similar to Flickr.com:
    Facebook (www.facebook.com)

  • The difference between digital and optical zoom:
Optical zoom occurs before the photo is take and digital zoom happens after the photo is taken. Geneally on the camera's screen or on a computer screen.

In optical zoom the lense changes focal length and magnification while the quality of the image stays the same. Whereas digital zoom crops the image to a smaller size, then enlargers the cropped protion to fill the frame again. This decreases the quality of the image.

  • Megapixel:
Megapixel is a name given to lots of pixels. Pixels are small squares that make up a picture. There are one million pixels in a magepixel.

Welcome

Hello, my name is Aimee van der Hoeff

I have created this blog as part of a paper called Participation in Occupation 1, in which I am studying at the Occupational Therapy School at Otago Polytechnic, New Zealand. In this paper I have attended numerous tutorials on various aspects of technology. I have summerised my findings and aquired knowledge relating to these specific technologies.

I hope you enjoy reading my blog's postings and learn something new about techology.

Information Technology and Ethical Issues

  • Definition of Information Technology/Information Communications Technology
"the production, storage and communication of information using computers and microelectronics" (Collins Shorter English Dictionary).

  • Definition of IT:
as defined by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), as "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems particularly software applications and computer hardware" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology, n.d.).

This kind of technology is prevalent in our society as it is seen as a "universal tool (Bynum & Rogerson) which influences our society in how we go about our life in terms of; banking, commerence, emplloyment, medicine, transportation, entertainment, family life, and education (Bynum & Rogerson). Currently IT is a common place for the developed world. It is seen in all aspects of life - from scoialisng to developing the economy through more efficent businesses. Without IT our efficiency in performing tasks and activities of daily living; ie cooking and cleaning would definitely decrease. This is because we all depend so much on technology in our occupations. However technology has allowed us to spend shorter amounts of time on activities that were once tedious, ie whashing clothes and dishes by hand. Now days we have machines that wash for us. In terms of IT; computers have allowed us to store loads of information in one place and efficent access of near infinite information via the internet.

  • How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How common place has it become?
Human societies, especially western societies have been one of knowledge and communication of information via technology. Information produced is displayed in a number of ways on the internet, from network websites to advertisements posts. The internet has become unlimited, endless, and a very common place in households. Most homes have more than not computer. People now study information technology.

  • IT devices/systems I feel comfortable and competent using:
    - Basic computer programmes, Microsoft word
    - Internet; websites- facebook, hotmail, google, youtube
    - cell phone; text, ring, take photos, store information
    - TV and dvd players
    - digital cameras

  • IT is used in Occupational Therapy practice:
    - Laps and computers are used to type up reports, access information from the interent in relation to the OT setting, communication between therapist, management, other professionals and sometimes clients, to organise the plan for the week and to store information.

  • Ethical Implications that arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices (eg. mobile phones) or systems (eg. internet):
There has been many ethical implications that have arisen from capturing, sharing and transfering information via IT devices. The ease and efficiency of accessing information like the information on social networks; ie facebook (www.facebook.com), bebo (www.bebo.com), and twitter (www.twitter.com). Because technology is logical and malleable it is always being shaped and up graded to perform new tasks, therefore ICT can perform nearly any task (Bynum & Rogerson). Meaning that although we have put up security walls on our websites that store our private and personal information, there is or will be a technology created that can hack into our website/s. It is aid that 'privacy is vital to human self-identity and autonomy (Bynum & Rogerson). However the rate ICT is evolving our large world that our ancestors had privacy in, is no more and now we are experiencing a world that is getting smaller and smaller as our technology develops. It is easier than ever to travel, access nformation and communicate with those on the other side of the world.

  • Definition of Computer Ethics:
Privacy, the "control over person information (Westin, 1967) and restricted access are topics of debate when considering coputer ethics. With the increase in transferring and holding person information, many countries including New Zealand have developed and implimented ethics into their computer courses through universities and polytechnics. Computer ethics are defined as the rules and standards governing the conduct of individuals with computers..concerning copyright, privacy and censorship (http://library.thinkquest.org/26658/cgi-bin/1-1.cgi).

  • Definition of Intellectual Property:
Intellectual property are legal property rights over creations of the mind, both artistic and commercial, and the corresponding fields of law. Under intellectual property law; owners are granted certain exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets, such as musical, literary, and artistic works, ideas, discoveries and inventions; and words phrases, symbols and designs. Common types of intellectual property include; copyrights, trademarks, patents, industrial design rights and trade secrets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/intellectual-property).

  • Definition of Social Justice:
Is given given everyone equal rights, activities and opportunities, ie "business, education, medical, and employment opportunities (Bynum & Rogerson). It becomes harder for those that can not access the information technology to benefit from what others are experiencing, their personal development maybe slower. Therefore socal justice in regards to ICT is the development of society's polices and practices "to more fully include people who in the past, have had limited access to computer resources, ie women, those in poverty, elderly, ethnic groups, rural residents, and those living with a disability (Bynum & Rogerson).

  • Informed Consent:
Giving legal consent of the participations of a person or event to be involved with onself; whether that is obtaining personal information or preforming a procedure on the person.

  • My ow words summarising why a great understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompassess will help us in our practice and daily lives:
being better informed aobut ITC and the ethichal issues it encompassess will help us over come the issues and deal with them move effectively in our practice and personal lives.

  • ITC development is inevidablle and the best option for all humans is to prepare for the side effects and use the technology for our benefits.
